- Course Description -
(at Basic Inquiry Life Drawing Center)
In this fundamental course, students explore the human figure through the disciplines of both drawing and painting. The first half of the course (A) “Drawing the Figure” flows directly into the second half (B) “Painting the Figure”. Emphasis is placed upon achieving realism and learning the classical techniques of the Old Masters. And for those that are ready, we explore various abstract approaches in search of more expressive figuration.
A) Drawing the Figure
In the first 3 classes, students explore how to draw the figure using the classical techniques of the Old Masters. Each class begins with an anatomical lecture on the major structures of the body followed by drawing from the live model. Students will be exploring different materials as well as the use of line, contour, 3-dimensionality, weight and shading, gesture, feeling and movement. Emphasis will be placed upon observational accuracy, working from memory/imagination, and integrating structural knowledge with your drawings. Each class is supplemented with individual and group feedback, demonstrations and homework.
B) Painting the Figure: In the final 3 classes, students learn how to paint the figure using the classical techniques of the Old Masters. Both the live model and photography will be used as students learn how to paint flesh tones using the fundamentals of color theory. Emphasis will be placed upon paint application: thin-to-thick, dark-to-light, dull-to-bright as well as how to blend smoothly and apply expressive brushstrokes. Students will learn how to make a painting in a single sitting as well as how to work through a long painting. We will build the figure through underpainting, grisaille, glazing, impasto as well as a little abstraction…to add a little spice and personal expression!
Each class includes individual and group critiques, lectures, demonstrations as well as art historical discussions. Also included is a suggested body of homework assignments.
